My opinion about Haley's plagiarism is that she should be punished because she adopted unfair means to complete her assignment. She did this two times. If she does not receive punishment, she will not understand that she did wrong. If she does not change herself, she will be habituated in plagiarism. Gradually her crebibility will be reduced and decreased. Her bad habit may influence her friend's academic activities, because they will follow her.
I do not agree with her mother because she should not defend her daughter's action!that way Haley will not understand the error of her ways. She will not rectify herself.Lodge should explain her mistake and make her promise not to do this kind of action in the future. Lodge should not make any remark about the decision of the school authority. Her teacher knew the suitable action that should be taken against plagiarism.

I partly disagree with Berkman's statements. They should not give so much importance to a student's past behavior. If a student commits a mistake or crime, he or she must be punished

My opinon about Haley's plagiarism is that she should be punished because she should be punished because she adopted unfair means to complete her assignment. Day by day her credibility will be reduced and decreased. Her bad habit may influence her friend's academic activities, because they will follow her.

Lodge shoul explainher mistake and make her promise not to do this kind of action in future. Lodge shold not make any remark about the decision of the school authority. Two students from the article, who plagiarized on their assignments, seems like they are in very similar situation. But they are accused by a bit different reason. They both used idea from some others source, but Marita designated about the source where she got if from, through the internet, but Haley used some other’s idea as her own words without any notification about sources. Similarity between Marita and Haley is they both don’t have idea how to use sources on their assignments. The level of punishment should different between them, because Haley plagiarized on her purpose even though she knew that what she doing is a wrong, but Marita had a lack of knowledge of plagiarism this means she just don’t know how to use sources she got from the encyclopedia. Therefore I think Haley should be punished more strictly than Marita because they did make similar mistakes, plagiarism, but they use their sources for different purpose.

David Oh

In case of Marita, she search the books to write her paper and used three sentence of those. She thought that it will be OK if she wrote the referense. She did not knew that she was plagiarizing.

In Haley's case, however, she know that she was plagiarizing. She just draged and copied from the internet website. Even if she changed the sentences, 30% of her paper was not her own. She also knew that it was guilty when she was plagiarizing.

To compare two situation, Haley's case is obviously wrong but in Marita's case, it is not clear if she did wrong thing or not. For that reason, Haley could have serious punishment but for Marita's plagiarism, just warning to her will be enough.

In the first article, author reported that Haley was a junior student at Hawken's School. She plagiarized twice on her academic works so that she got expelled from the school as the result. She habitually used other's works, copying and pasting from internet. Even though she had known what to write about, she just plagiarized, using websites which offer many essays to download.
In the second article, Marita was a freshman at UCLA. On her first writing assignment, she used some words from the encyclopedia because she wanted to do well on it. Even though, she listed citation on the bottom of the last page of her paper, she quoted only some of sentences that she copied from the encylopedia. Therefore, the school consider her action as a plagiarism.
Compared to these articles, Haley plagiarized most of her works from the websites, but Marita did from the encyclopedia and left the citation on her papers. Therefore, these two cases are different, but I think that they should be punished the same way. Marita was her first plagiarism and missed only few of quotation. It is proper to get Marita less harsh punishment than Haley get.

Haley and Marita both have been accused of plagiarism. First, Haley was high school student but Marita had been college student at UCLA. Haley was just smart students before action of plagiarism occurred. She did plagiarism her one of homework essays. In contrast to Haley, Marita was first writing assignment. I think generally Marita have more accused than Haley. Their cases are not same but we can tell totally different. Haley used sources in internet because she did not have a time for her homework. However, Marita do not need to find out internet. She can just use encyclopedia for class. It is difficult to say same action. Haley was banished by school but Marita didn’t express in this article.

The cases of plagiarism of two students are different. I think that they must be punished about their fault. But, dismisal from the school is not proper way to them. I think the purpose of school is education. So, the penalty to students who did academic wrong must be within the purview of the education.

I agree with what David Oh pointed out, in my opinion, school should give one more chance to her because she put lots of effort in academic life and school’s decision seems too harsh for her particularly young high school student. But school should punish her different ways such as give her a fail grade in English class for just this semester. This will be the best way for both student and school to prevent plagiarism with minimum of risks. Plagiarism should be regulated strictly because this is the kind of act which involves stealing a other’s property rather than borrowing it.

This article gives me a lots of thinking. Now we do not have a rule about plagiarism obviously. It is hard to recognize how side is plagiarism because plagiarism's definition is not same as copy. But on the other plagiarism is not equal to everyone. Sometimes I feel like Haley Lodge's action because it it esay to get good grade. If i spent much time for essay, it could not guarantee good grade at all. For this reason, many students preference this way. Haley Lodge was good student before this action occured. So school balked at her action. I understad both sides of Haley Lodge's mother and Berkman. If I had daugher like Haley Lodge, I could demonstrate my child clearly. However, Berkman has right opinion. It depands on what is my statu of society.

In my opinion, the punishment was rigorous. If we think about the role of school not only the grading student but also the educating them, they should admit referring others. And if we think in Haley’s position, she had her own idea but she didn’t know how to write it. In this case, the best way to improve her expressing ability was reading other’s works and refers those things. Furthermore, she didn’t copy all of original, but added her thought and tried to use her own words. For that reason, she could think it was not a plagiarism. Even if her plagiarism was serious, expelling was too harsh. They took away the chance to fix the wrong thing. Just giving her the grade failure was enough.

In my opinion, the penalty on Haley Lodge was too harsh. I think the purpose of school is education. The penalty of expulsion which they applied to the student conducting plagiarism is a deprivation of chance of education. Although it is important for an organization to obey regulations, I think there was probably other appropriate punishment for her. In result, It was a cruel punishment to the student because they take away the opportunity of education. I think that the penalty to students who did academic wrong must be within the purview of the education.

According to this article, Haley Lodge plagiarized twice on her essays and in result got expelled from her school. I believe that her plagiarsm was habitual and has to be fixed. The author reported that she'd already read the book and knew what she wanted to write on her second essay, but she just plagiarized from other's words from internet. Even though she could have written her papers by herself, she habitually copied other essays and rewrited them in her own words.
As I mentioned above, Haley got expelled from the school due to her plagiarism twice. I don't think that punishment on her was harsh and rigorous. Her first plagiarism was probated and she had been suspended. However, she hadn't ceased and did it again. Her punishment was proper and suitable to show standard to students how plagiarism is a strict disobedience.
I more agree with Berkman. Although it is true that Haley's mother said their kids has lived in different worlds that they've lived, just copying and pasting other's words are absolutely wrong. It also give negative effects to develop their child's creativity. I think that Berkman's opinion of preventing plagiarism is good for students.

The author discusses the plagiarism in his article "Are you kids cheating" in The Plain Dealer. According to author, students like haley these days rely mostly on the internet or some other resources to get their homework done on time.
Haley decided to her homework on the last moment rather than finishing up early. So, she start using other sources like internet. In my opinion what haley done for her homework was wrong, she could have taken help from her instructor or someone else. In fact she does not care about the result that could cause her. Haley was expelled from the school under plagiarism and I agree with the statement of the school because she has done this twice in her school life. Even she knew that it could create problem for her while submitting assignment. One would thought that she could have been given some kind of punishment rather than expulsion from the school. Her mother was defending her because she believes that her daughter is a good student. She was trying to protect her rather than giving her advice or inspiration about her work. This could be because haley was her daughter and mother will try to protect their children in any ways. In my opinion that Mr. Berkman (Dean of the school) was right in his decision because he has to take a decision as a dean to give examples to the freshman students. He actually want to show the students that students who plagiarized that they should do work by their own. It looks hard but they want you to work hard and their work hard will pay later in the life.
